Splitwise™ Terms and Privacy Policy

Last Updated: February 7th, 2014

We have a document like this so that you understand that, among other things, we are offering you this Splitwise service "as-is" without a warrantee, and that bills, IOUs, debts and payments are informal and not legally binding contracts of some kind. Splitwise™ is currently in beta-testing, so some features of our website and apps may not work exactly as planned - please be patient with us and we'll always do our best to support you.

We will modify our terms of use and privacy policy periodically and post it on this webpage, https://www.splitwise.com/terms. Here are the policies, in plain English:

Privacy Policy Basics

  • We won't spam you, sell or give away your email address, or sell your personal information in any way under normal circumstances (there are a limited number of exceptions - see below).
  • We won't share information you provide to us to outside parties, unless you very explicitly tell us to (for instance, by sharing an expense with a friend, or applying for an offer 3rd party service through our site).
  • We may use your transaction, usage, email/phone, and location information to show you specific advertisements or offers on our own site, without providing it to third parties. For instance, we may show ads for apartments cheaper than your current apartment based on the rent expense you share on our system.
  • If you or a Splitwise friend of yours contacts us for support, or as part of a random account audit, we may go into your account in "administrator mode" to help support you or your friend.
  • We may periodically review transactions on your account as part of an audit to detect spam, monitor for usability problems, and improve our services. If we do so we will not disclose any information we find there to any third party in any personally-identifiable way.
  • We may use publicly available information about your email address or phone number to help you during support or personalize your experience, including ads or offers. For instance, if you have a public avatar stored on a service such as Gravatar associated with your email, we may automatically populate your user avatar on Splitwise. Similarly, if you email our support team, the support system may show us the Twitter account associated with your email if you have opted (on Twitter) to be publicly findable based on your email address.
  • We will email you when we release new features, have important news, and when you have a notification generated by activity (including a monthly summary). All of these emails are optional and can be set by going into your account settings.
  • We will allow you to completely delete your group at any time (and will not hold your data hostage, i.e, will try and provide a way for you to download it), but it may be retained in backups.
  • On Splitwise, transactions are only visible to the people directly involved, or with the group the transaction is classified under. We will do our best to keep these private from all 3rd parties.
  • If you live outside the US, we will be storing data on our computers in the US and following US privacy laws.
